ONTARIO – A poll, conducted by Environics Research, shows 85 per cent of Simcoe North voters oppose the Liberal government’s plan to sell 60 per cent of Hydro One, and eight in ten say Hydro One privatization is an important vote determining issue in the upcoming by-election.
“This poll shows us that the Liberals are likely to pay a price in the by-election for their hugely unpopular plan to privatize Hydro One,” said Katrina Miller, spokesperson for the Keep Hydro Public coalition, which commissioned the poll.
Of those polled, 44 per cent said it was a very important issue in determining their vote, and another 37 per cent said it was a somewhat important issue. The poll also shows that 78% believe the sell-off will result in higher electricity bills.
“Most voters know that privatizing Hydro One is just too costly – we will see our bills go up, government revenues go down, and public accountability disappear,” commented Miller. “That’s why we are seeing opposition grow and voters looking to hold the Liberal government to account.”
The poll is being released just hours before NDP Leader Andrea Horwath hosts a Townhall in Orillia to discuss the proposed Hydro One sell-off directly with voters. The meeting is at the Best Western Plus Mariposa Inn and Conference Centre, at 400 Memorial Ave. It begins at 6:30 p.m.
“Although opposition to the plan is highest among NDP voters, the Liberals should note that three out of four of their supporters are also opposed, and 84 per cent think it is an important issue in determining their vote”, noted Miller. “ It’s time for the Liberal government to walk away from the Hydro One sell-off.”
Environics Research conducted a telephone survey of 817 residents of the Ontario riding of Simcoe North on August 24, 2015. The survey was conducted using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology and the results were weighted by age and gender. The margin of error for a sample of 817 yields results which can be considered accurate to within plus or minus 3.4 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
Keep Hydro Public, is a broad coalition of over 20 community, environment, labour and student organizations that are committed to working to keep Hydro One fully publicly owned and accountable.
